Exciting encounters gives new thinking

The Department of Applied Science and Design (NVD) covers a very wide field of research directions and opportunities. Our postgraduate subjects are Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Mathematics. Research is also conducted in didactics of natural sciences. This width provides opportunities for exciting encounters between subjects and new thinking.

Most of the research at NVD is grouped into one profile area of the Mid Sweden University - The Forest as a Resource. It contains many research projects of great importance, both for the region, in which we operate, and nationally / internationally. The vision of the profile area is to, by expanding the knowledge about forest utilization, affect business development in the region.

The single largest component in "The Forest as a Resource" is the centre Fibre Science and Communication Network (FSCN), which is a global leader in fibre technology. In the profile area The Forest as a Resource there are also studies of bio energy, wood products, bio-remediation and waste water treatment, and more biological aspects of forestry, for example, issues related to tree nutrient uptake from soil, pheromones functions of insect pests and the possibility of synthetic production of these substances, the biological consequences of ash return for life in the woods and water, species survival in fragmented forest habitats and plant physiological aspects of stress from the environment.

Our laboratory operates in modern and well equipped premises at Campus Sundsvall, Campus Härnösand and Örnsköldsvik. We have the advantage of working together and sharing facilities with, for example, SCA R & D Centre in Sundsvall and the National Winter Sports Centre in Östersund.
