Medical Insurance
In Sweden, medical treatment is very expensive without any form of insurance and it is therefore very important that you arrange insurance coverage for your study period. It might be a good idea to have a thorough medical and dental check-up before leaving for Sweden. If you need to consult a dentist in Sweden, go to your nearest public dental clinic, Folktandvården. If you need to see a doctor, go to the nearest Public Health Centre, Vårdcentral.
Insurance during school hours
All students in Sweden are covered by a personal injury insurance (general student insurance). The insurance applies in Sweden during school hours and during travel to and from the location where school hours are spent.
Since insurance only applies during school hours and during direct travel between home and the location where school hours are spent, it is very important to the individual student looking to obtain adequate insurance covering their spare time.
Insurance during leisure time
EU/EEA Citizens
EU citizens should bring the European Health Insurance card, filled out by the Social Insurance Office in their home country. The card states that you are entitled to health care on the same conditions and at the same price as Swedish citizens. Take this with you anytime you need to seek medical care. EU citizens studying for a programme extending one year are advised to apply for Swedish Personal number (personnummer) at the Swedish National Tax Board (Skatteverket).

Non EU/EEA Citizens
Staying one year or more
As an international student from outside EU or EEA staying for more than a year (+365 days), i.e. if you have a residence permit valid for more than 12 months you can apply for a Swedish Personal Number issued by the Swedish National Tax Board. This entitles students to medical care at a standard patient fee (same as for Swedish citizens).
It will take up to 8 weeks to be issued and therefore it is very important that students have a valid insurance for their travel to Sweden and for the time spent in the country prior to applying for civil registration. Thus, to be fully covered, student need to arrange private medical insurance for this time period. Please note that dental care is very expensive in Sweden even with the Swedish Personal number.
Staying less than a year
Students from non EU or EEA countries who have a residence permit valid for less than one year are not entitled to civil registration, and the civic benefits that such a number provide. These students will have to arrange their own health insurance that is valid in Sweden.

Exchange students
Mid Sweden University offers a insurance in case of emergency for all exchange students, called the Student In (Swedish State’s Insurance for Foreign Students In Sweden). An exchange student is a student studying or practising in Sweden in accordance with an agreement between a Swedish educational institution and a foreign educational institution.
The insurance applies during the education period in accordance with the actual semester dates they are registered as well as two weeks prior to the start of studies and two weeks after the end of studies.The insurance applies twenty-four hours a day in Sweden.

Fee-Paying students
All tuition fee paying students at Mid Sweden University are covered by comprehensive insurance called FAS issued by Kammarkollegiet. The insurance also applies for fee paying students who have been awarded the Mid Sweden University Tuition fee Scholarhips (IPK). The insurance does not cover students who are SI-scholarship holders.
FAS insurance is provided to so-called ‘third country students’ who are accepted to, and undertake, higher education at the university or college and who pay term fees for the education at Mid Sweden University. Many of these students are unable to purchase their own insurance during their stay in Sweden. The insurance pays for necessary and reasonable costs for emergency medical care or dental care when the insured, during the policy term, suffers illness or has an accident.
The insurance applies during the education period in accordance with the LADOK or equivalent system as well as two weeks prior to the start of studies and two weeks after the end of studies.
