What is FSCN

FSCN – Fibre Science and Communication Network is a multi-disciplinary research centre at Mid-Sweden University.

We work on improving the profitability of today's paper industry, and on finding new ways to use the Forest as a Resource. We engineer processes for the separation and refining of forest-based material flows that can be further refined to provide sustainable alternatives to e.g. plastics and fossile fuels. We also develop ways to use wood fibres, paper and board in new ways, for example in three-dimensional packaging structures.

We have four research focus areas:

- Mechanical pulping technology – research into the reduction of energy use

- Water chemistry – extracting value from dissolved and colloidal materials

- Advanced paper materials – developing new uses for paper and wood fibre

- Industrial symbiosis – industry-driven projects that turn side-streams and waste into value

FSCN is part of the university's research environment Forest and Mountains, financed by the Knowledge Foundation. We are over 50 scientists connected to the FSCN Centre and we co-operates with the research centres STC and DPC at Mid Sweden university. FSCN also brings together other MIUN colleagues in chemistry, electronics, materials science, media technology, graphical design, etc. FSCN's turnover in 2011 was 60 million SEK.
