Students awarded in College Photograper of the Year

Two Mid Sweden University photojournalism students, Tobias Sterner and Jimmy Croona, have won awards in College Photographer of the Year (CPOY), the world’s largest and most prestigious competition for photojournalism students and young photojournalists.

Tobias Sterner, a third-year student in the bachelors program in photojournalism in the Department of Media and Communication Sciences, won a silver award in the category sports action. His black-and-white image of a hammer thrower can be viewed here>>

 

Jimmy Croona, who graduated in the spring of 2011, received a bronze place in the category Documentary for his examination project ”Liberi non Grata” focusing on social orphans in Riga. His images can be viewed here>> 

 

Competitors in this year’s CPOY came from 132 colleges as well as undergraduate and graduate programs at universities in 21 countries, and contributed a total of 14, 216 images.

This is the first time Mid Sweden University students win top awards.

 

CPOY was founded in 1945 and is sponsored by the University of Missouri School of Journalism n the United States. The School also sponsors Picture of the Year International, one of the oldest and largest competitions in the field of photojournalism.

 

The jury consisted of Alice Gabriner, senior photo editor at National Geographic Magazine; David Gilkey, staff photographer and video editor at National Public Radio; Lisa Krantz, photojournalist at San Antonio Express-News; Joe Mahoney, chief of multimedia, Rocky Mountain Investigative News Network; Geri Migielicz, cofounder and editor in chief of Story 4; and Colin Mulvany, multimedia producer at the The Spokesman-Review.
