About

I have my background at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, SLU, where I got my Master in Forestry in 1991 followed by PhD studies and work as an extension specialist. I got a Licentiate degree in forest economics in 1995 and a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism at Stockholm University in 1996. Then I worked for the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency in Stockholm between 1996-1997 partly as a secretary in the future study “Sweden 2021” partly as associated head of the Swedish Mountain Safety Board. In year 2000 I graduated with the PhD thesis Environmental Valuation and Policy: Applications in the management of endangered species, recreation, and tourism. From 1998 to 2007 I was a director of nature- and culture tourism research at the research institute ETOUR and I was the head of the institute 2001-2002. I became an Associate Professor in tourism studies in 2007 and a full Professor at Mid-Sweden University, Department of Tourism Studies and Geography, with focus on nature-based tourism in 2008.

I have participated in several larger research projects. During 2000-2006 I was a project leader for Tourism and Protected Areas within the Mountain Mistra Research Programme. During 2001 and 2003 I was responsible for on-site visitor studies at Fulufjället National Park in order to analyze the effects of the national park establishment. For the period 2006 – 2013 I was a program director of the Outdoor Recreation in Change research program (www.friluftsforskning.se) which included 15 researchers at seven Swedish universities. Starting in 2013, I am responsible for the research project The new mountain experience. Recreation trends and sustainable development in the context of a magnificent Swedish mountain landscape (www.storslagnafjall.se) including colleagues at Mid-Sweden University and Karlstad University. I also work with the establishment of a knowledge center for outdoor recreation and nature-based tourism: www.friluftsforskning.se.

I supervise three PhD students doing research on the supply of nature-based tourism in Sweden, outdoor recreation and environmental awareness, and physical planning for outdoor recreation in coastal areas respectively.

Internationally I have participated in a joint Nordic-Baltic project on standardized visitor monitoring methods, EU Cost Action E33 on Forests for recreation and nature tourism, and the knowledge overview Social Indicators in the Forest Sector in Northern Europé. I have also chaired two major international conferences – the 11th International Symposium on Society and Resource Management (ISSRM) in Östersund year 2005, and the 6th International Conference on Monitoring and Management of Visitors in Recreational and Protected Areas (MMV) in Stockholm year 2012 (www.mmv2012.se).

Besides research I have participated in different commissioned projects and assignments. For example, I have been involved with the development of goals and indicators for the Swedish national outdoor recreation policy and the environmental objectives. I have participated in a reference group on leisure statistics with Statistics Sweden and I’m currently a review panel member of the Miljö 2015 program at the Norwegian Research Council. I have been a member of the National Council for Outdoor Recreation and I’m a board member of the Swedish Tourism Association (STF). I have participated in the Ideell Arena’s Fenix Program for strategic leadership in non-profit organizations.

Areas of interest

My research is in nature-based tourism and outdoor recreation with special focus on participation and demand, economic analyses, visitor monitoring and trends. I also do research on the supply of nature-based tourism and tourism in protected areas.
