Degree requirements
Higher education in Sweden is divided into three cycles; the first, second and third, according to the Bologna process. All degrees are awarded in one of these cycles. The degrees are also divided into general degrees and professional degrees. Degrees may be awarded after completing a study programme or a combination of single-subject courses. Mid Sweden University has the right to award the degrees listed below.
Requirements
Every degree has a qualification descriptor in which the requirements are described - some of the descriptors are translated into English. See the Subject List for possible major subjects/specializations.
General degrees – first cycle
Högskoleexamen med inriktning mot xx (translated into Higher Education Diploma with specialization in Xx) is always indicated with a major subject as specialization (Xx). See the qualification descriptor for the requirements:

General degrees – second cycle
Magisterexamen med huvudområdet xx (translated into Degree of Master of Arts/Science – 60 credits – with a major in Xx), often with indication of faculty in the Swedish degree title and always with a major subject (Xx). See the qualification descriptor for the requirements:

Professional degrees
Yrkesexamina (professional degrees) are awarded in the fields of engineering, nursing, education et c. Professional degrees can be awarded in either the first or the second cycle and they vary in length depending on their character. It is uncommon for international students studying for our professional degrees, why the degree requirements for these are not presented here. Mid Sweden University has the right to award the following professional degrees (translated into English): Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Nursing, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Science in Social Work, Bachelor/Master of Science in Education, Bachelor/Master of Science in Engineering and Master of Science in Psychology. Qualification descriptors in English are available at the Degree Office.
Research degrees – third cycle
Licentiatexamen i ämnet xx (translated into Degree of Licentiate in Xx), always indicated with the faculty in the Swedish degree title and a subject (Xx), requires at least 120 credits, including a thesis of at least 60 credits. All courses required must be stated in an individual study plan approved by the faculty board. See the link on the right of this page for possible subjects.
Doktorsexamen i ämnet xx (translated into Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Xx), always indicated with the faculty and a subject (Xx), requires 240 credits, including a thesis of 120 credits. The thesis has to be defended at a public disputation. All courses required must be stated in an individual study plan approved by the faculty board.
