Practical Guide
To help you prepare for your studies we have listed important things that you need to do before and after you arrive to Sweden.
Before Arrival
Residence Permit and Right of residence
Please note that students with a citizenship in countries outside EU/EEA have to apply for a Residence Permit to study in Sweden. As an EU/EEA citizen you have the right of residence in Sweden and may study without a residence permit.
Student accommodation
Housing choices vary from campus to campus, but all types of student accommodation in Sweden is generally of a high standard. As an admitted international student at Mid Sweden University you can easily book a room on your own, by sending an e-mail to the Hosuing Company of your choice.
Insurance for students
Prevent unpleasant surprises and make sure you have insurance! Insurance should preferably cover yourself, your property and your accommodation. In Sweden, medical treatment is very expensive without insurance and it is therefore very important that you arrange insurance coverage for your study period.
Travel to Mid Sweden University
The quickest way to reach Mid Sweden University from Stockholm is to fly to the Sundsvall/Härnösand airport “Midlanda”, or the Åre/Östersund Airport, which takes about 45 minutes. Other options are to travel by train (take between 3-6 hours). A cheaper way to travel north from Stockholm is to take a bus with a journey time of 4‐7 hours. If you intend to drive to Mid Sweden University, you should follow the E4 highway northwards.
Pick-up service
Mid Sweden University offers a pick-up service to all new international students admitted to their first semester. This service is operated by the Student Unions, is free of charge, and available to students once they have arrived in Härnösand, Sundsvall, and Östersund. Students will receive more information about the Pick-up service, in a welcome letter, that is sent out after the admission process is finalised.
After Arrival
Access to accommodation upon arrival
One of the first things you might want to do is to access to your new home. The keys to your new home are handed out by the housing company within their Office hours (opening hours). We recommend students to arrive within office hours, which usually is Monday to Friday 10:00 – 17:00, but we understand that it is not always possible.
Arriving after opening hours
If you arrive after opening hours, you will not be able to pick up the keys to your accommodation. The Student Unions can collect keys in advance for students who applied for their Pick-up service by the deadline date. However, at some companies it is not possible to collect keys in advance. If your accommodation, for some reason, not is available on the day of your arrival you can always book a room at the local Youth Hostel.
Introduction days
We understand that the first couple of days as an international student can be confusing which is why we offer introduction activities to help you settle in. The week before the start of the semester Mid Sweden University offers orientation activities such as informational meetings with your Department, introduction to computer facilities and library, and much more. Please plan your trip in such a way that you will be able to participate in the introduction activities.
Registration
The first and most important thing you need to do when you arrive at Mid Sweden University is to register yourself as a student. International students will be able to register at Mid Sweden University, in person, during the introduction days.
