My modelling research interest is to a large extent pursuing the development of new particle based tools or applying established particle methods to various problems in physics or mechanics. Some examples of my earlier experiences of particle-based methods are in classical mechanics, many-particle problems in quantum mechanics, and molecular dynamics simulation (MDS). I am also a co-author of a new particle method: the Dynamic Functional Particle Method (DFPM), which is a general numerical solver for large (also non-linear) differential equations. In the case of large eigenvalue problems DFPM has already proved itself as a very efficient method (at least 10 times faster than e.g. ARPACK).
Area of interest
A few examples of established physical particle methods are molecular dynamics (MDS), smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH), smooth particle applied mechanics (SPAM), Hybrid Lattice Particle Method (HLPM), Element Free Galerkin (EFG), particle methods in celestial mechanics, particle methods for special effects and graphical animations etc. These methods can be used to treat the physical particles (or entities) directly. One can thus perform simulations of various phenomena in physics and material or fluid mechanics. One may recognize that it is often possible to merge many of the physical entities into super particles. It is about multi-scales and what kind of physical phenomena one wishes to study.
Current research
At the FSCN research centre, particle methods have already been applied to problems related to papermachine runnability and to the paper web by viewing the material as a continuous medium. Work is also in progress by PhD student Johan Persson to model the paper at the fibre network level by using particle modelling. MDS is a technique that makes it possible to simulate the self-assemblation and dynamical structures of nano-particles deposited on a paper surface. This is relevant in the nano-electronics KKS-project which is a collaboration with Prof. Hans-Erik Nilsson and Prof. Håkan Olin.
