Knowledge on how engineering and technological systems can contribute to the sustainable development of society and improved environmental conditions are central topics in the field of environmental engineering.

Sustainable development requires that natural resources are used in ways that do not cause depletion, loss of biodiversity or jeopardising the long-term productivity of our ecosystems. Furthermore, sustainable development also means social and economic development, to improve human welfare and to protect cultural values.

The subject deals with the study of energy and material flows in order to provide useful knowledge for the management of natural resources and for preventing environmental problems. How material flows in society can be made more efficient, for example through cascade connections, reuse and recycling of products and materials, as well as methods for handling waste and water treatment, are studied. System optimisation and transition to renewable resources are important elements in courses and research. To provide an understanding of how new technologies and technical systems develop, environmentally-driven innovation and the diffusion of innovations and technology are also studied. Environmental management and audit schemes are important tools to improve the environmental performance of companies, and are therefore also central topics in environmental engineering. Knowledge of techniques for environmental remediation is also important in education and research within the subject.

Environmental engineering is given as courses on both first and second cycle, and is strongly related to postgraduate studies in ecotechnology and environmental sciences. Courses in environmental engineering are given at Campus Östersund, and as distance courses. At Mid Sweden University the subject of environmental engineering is represented by the professor of ecotechnology.
