Mid Sweden University has an open position at the Department of Natural Sciences, campus Sundsvall, for a Postdoctoral Fellow at the research centre FSCN
Ref nr. MIUN 2015/1632
Mid Sweden University has an open position as a post-doc at the FSCN research centre in the Materials Science group.
FSCN – Fibre Science and Communication Network is a multi-disciplinary research centre at Mid Sweden University. FSCN develops research and creates new applications and business opportunities based on sustainable bio-materials from the forest. In the Materials Science group, where the post-doc will be active, about 20 researchers and graduate students are working with nanomaterials for green energy applications.
Job description
- Exciting opportunity to kick-start your career in advanced thin film technology
- Address some of the most challenging problems in materials science and nanotechnology
- Obtain experience at an internationally recognized leading next gen solar organization
This position requires expertise in directed self-assembly of nanostructured materials at liquid interfaces. As Postdoctoral Fellow, you will carry out fundamental research on understanding the mechanisms and kinetics of anisotropic Janus particle assemblies with the goal of engineering large centimeter-sized vertically aligned nanorod arrays. Assembly methods will involve use of Langmuir Blodgett routes and other self assembly techniques to achieve controlled and ordered particle array aggregation across scales. Further development is focused on transforming the nanorod arrays into mechanically robust thin films useful, for example, in solar applications. In situ optical, electron microscope techniques, as well as surface energy characterization of liquids and nanorods are the principal analytical techniques that will be used to investigate colloidal crystallization and advance the understanding of critical requirements for large scale assembly.
The position is funded by the Knowledge Foundation (KK-Stiftelsen) and is part of the project “Paper solar cells” led by Mid Sweden University and in collaboration with company Sol Voltaics. The successful applicant will be positioned at Mid Sweden University, however, a major part of the project will be carried out in collaboration with Sol Voltaics. Occasional travel will be required between Mid Sweden University, Sundsvall and Sol Voltaics in Lund, Sweden.
Excellent oral and written communication skills are required. Other duties will include generation of invention disclosures and publication of results in peer-reviewed journals. The candidate must be able to independently design and carry out experiments as well as contribute productively as part of a multidisciplinary applied R&D team.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications:
- Candidates must have received a PhD within the past three years from an accredited college or university.
- PhD in chemistry, materials science, physics or related field.
Other desired qualifications
- Background in colloidal chemistry, soft matter physics, or materials science
- Experience in SEM imaging and main surface characterization methods
- Experience in working with solution-based nanoparticle systems
- Solid understanding of liquid interface phenomena
- Experience in solution based thin film formation
