Härnösand, with approximately 25 000 inhabitants, is located about 450 kilometres north of Stockholm. It is one of the oldest centres of higher education in Sweden. The primary fields of study in Härnösand are Education and the Humanities.

Härnösand is a charming and inspiring coastal town in which you may live and grow without wasting too much time on stressful trips. In 2004, Härnösand was awarded the prestigious title “City Centre of the Year.” Here you always have the campus lectures, public entertainments, and recreational activities conveniently available in your immediate vicinity. The sea, the woods, the mountains, and the fishing waters are never far away.

Härnösand is surrounded by beautiful scenery. The beautiful waterfall “Västanåfallet” and the World Heritage “Höga kusten”, The High Coast, are well worth mentioning. When in Härnösand you should not forsake the opportunity to visit “Smitingen”—the outskirts of the archipelago situated 5 km from the city centre—which has beautiful cliffs and a wonderful sand beach that harbours some of the best beach volley pitches in the whole country.

The city offers a rich cultural and recreational life. Situated here is among other things the large library “Sambiblioteket”, which constitutes the centre of Campus Härnösand. It combines the local, provincial, and university libraries in a unique collaboration under the very same roof.

Culture and amusement

In Härnösand you will also find “Technichus”—a house full of technological exhibitions and experimental activities for both children and adults. On the mountain “Murberget,” you will find the provincial museum, which is the second largest recreational activity museum in Sweden.

The art gallery in the city square is also well worth a visit. The city offers a rich variety of theatre, music, and dance. In the city centre you find cosy cafés, pubs, places of entertainment with live music (troubadours, jazz and rock), and plenty of restaurants to choose from. If you happen to be into sports there are also several opportunities.

The slalom slope “Vårdkasen” is situated very close to the city centre. Just outside the city there is a race-track and in the woods around “Västanåfallet” you will have the opportunity for horseback riding. Public swimming baths and sports centres, illuminated running and skiing tracks, and venues for mountain climbing are other facilities offered to the one interested in sport.

Härnösand is the oldest city in the region and it is both the seat of the county government and the cathedral city. Architecturally, the city centre mixes the old and the new. A great deal of the small scale wood buildings have been preserved. To live in Härnösand is simple. We have space enough for you!

Campus Härnösand

Campus Härnösand is a small, pleasant campus, which offers nearness to everything. You easily move between the lecture halls, the cafeterias, the students’ union, and the library. In the library, you find “Lärcentrum Origo.” There, students get help finding literature, using study technology, and planning studies etcetera. Situated there are also group study rooms and equipment for video conferences. From campus it is also very near to the student dorms and the city centre, which is only a few minutes walk away.

Student life in Härnösand

On the top floor of the main building of Campus Härnösand, never far away from the students, you will find the office of the students’ union. As a member, you may come here with questions, to get help, or just to get a glimpse of the fantastic view over the city.

You find the students’ social activities in “Villa Nybo,” a cosy wooden house in the midst of the campus area. You come here for a sheltered spot to study in, to have a cup of coffee or tea and play various games together with your friends, or just to socialise in general. If you rather want to participate in the more party oriented aspects of student life, you should visit “Kajutan.” Once a week, a students’ union night is arranged with very favourable prices on drink and food. In short, in Härnösand we have fun together. Do you want to get that little extra out of your time of study, to get to know more people, and to get a great number of happy memories? Well then you should contact the students’ union. There is a place for everyone there. Welcome!
