"Abuse and humiliation"
This project aims to obtain evidence that being involved in a stressful situation leads to increased number of spontaneous intrusive images within a subsequent period of time.
More specifically, after watching a film depicting distressing scenes of verbal abuse and humiliation subjects, while imagining themselves in the scenarios, allowing the memory consolidation to occur leads to more intrusions associated with abuse and humiliation (and possibly higher needs to retaliate if being provoked) as compared to a control group in which memory consolidation was interrupted (in order to reduce intrusive images).
If so, this would suggest that these kinds of a post-event factor are important in explaining increased aggressive behaviours. In addition, people who are trained to adopt a generally positive post-stressor appraisal style could reduce intrusions following exposure events related to abuse and humiliation.
