Industridesign

In today’s market, design is an important competitive tool. Form, design and function, but also what company is behind the product, are decisive factors when it comes to choosing one product over another. As consumer awareness and demand increases, it raises the bar for the products and services companies offer. The job of the industrial designer is to provide these products and services with a good design.

A good design will appeal to the consumer and is often a decisive factor in the decision to buy. Being aware of this when working with design will increase chances of success in most lines of trade, which more and more businesses are beginning to realize. The internationalization of markets also results in a higher production rate.

If you want to be a part of the development of current and future products and services, industrial design is for you. The Industrial Design programme at Mid Sweden University includes theoretical as well as practical assignments, where you will acquire knowledge of the creative process of a functional form. You will learn expression by sketching combined with form studies, using computers for design, communication, production and construction methods. An important part of the work of the industrial designer is analysing a problem, and finding a solution based on observations of how people work and act in different situations.

Mid Sweden University is currently developing a research lab for industrial design where research on how products are perceived will be carried out. Perception is studied by measuring, for example, stress, brain waves, ECG and eye tracking. This way, we obtain more knowledge of how we perceive and are affected by products and services, which can be used for new design. At Mid Sweden University there are several collaborations and projects connected to businesses involved in this area.

There is a demand for industrial designers, and they can be found in mid-sized and large businesses as well as in consulting firms.
