Research Project at STC

3D-ConTourNet

3D content creation, coding and transmission over future media networks (3D-ConTourNet). This Action undertakes coordinated research collaboration, at European level, in 3D multimedia creation, encoding, delivery and reception of services and applications over future networking technologies.

ASIS - Autonomous Sensors for Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks

Can autonomous wireless sensor networks be designed to fulfill the requirements of industrial applications? That is the research question for this synergy research project, ASIS. Researchers are addressing the challenges of making the wireless sensor network technology competitive in relation to wired networks with respect to reliability, predictability, communication performance, and maintainability. Three research issues will be addressed in a coordinated manner to advance the field.

BrightnESS logo

BrightnEss

BrightnESS is a European Union-funded project within the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme. There are 18 European institutes and universities from 11 countries participating in the BrightnESS partnership. The total budget is nearly €20 M and the duration of the project will be three years. And Mid Sweden University is a part of the project.

DAWN - Data Analytics in (Wireless) Industrial Networks

In 2020, about 75 billion different devices will be connected to the Internet and together they make the Internet of Things. The process industry can really take advantage of the increased data availability in terms of both productivity and energy efficiency. In this project, researchers will focus on the development of data analysis system for large-scale sensor networks. The aim is to increase capacity for the industry's data management by developing new data mining algorithms.

Detection of oil spill in storm water through online measurement (prestudy)

The purpose of this study is to establish a measurement point for continuous reading of oil spill in storm water drains. It would provide information on what level of pollutions that occur in a specific ground drain. The result can be used to explore the possibility of developing a low-cost sensor that makes it economically possible to have multiple measuring points in a complete storm water system to detect oil spill on an early stage.

European Training Network on Full Parallax Imaging

Recreating visual reality can never be achieved by painting an image on a flat surface such as a TV screen. It requires a full-parallax display which can recreate the complete lightfield. Recent years have seen major developments and now the European Training Network on Full-Parallax Imaging (ETN-FPI) will develop a new generation of researchers trained both in the relevant physics, and in the biology of human vision.

Failure detector for hydraulic machines

The failure detector is a product from several years of research and it can help industries to prevent expensive machine breakdown. The main purpose with the project is to eliminate the risks that remain before a commercializing the failure detector to the business market. The risks that remain are industrial verification of the detector, verifying that the detector can be produced in a cost and form-factor that fits the needs of a business plan that has been adopted to this verification.

Flis - Characterization of wood disintegration processes

The condition of cutting tools used in a wood disintegration process has a large impact on the quality of the products. Today we don’t know how long the intervals for replacement of worn out tools should be. This project aims at gaining knowledge for how process parameters for wood disintegration are related. By using optical techniques, wireless on-rotor sensing and multivariate modeling we want to find out the most feasible and cost efficient way to monitor these parameters online.

Klimatkammare

Foggy

In order to determine icing conditions and to make icing forecast information it is required to know the air content of liquid water, Liquid Water Content (LWC) and droplet size, Median Volume Diameter (MVD).

Foric doktorand

FORIC - Forest as a Resource Industrial Research College

FORIC (Forest as a resource industrial research college) is our new industrial research school. Program director is professor Per Engstrand. FORIC is financed by the KK Foundation and a part of our KK research environment at Mid Sweden University.

ID Pos - Large Areas for RFID Identification, Positioning and Interaction

In 2020 there will be up to 50 billion devices connected to the Internet. A growing part of these devices are RFID- and NFC technology. Today a RFID systems have the ability to determine the presence and ID-number of a tag. In this project researcher want to investigate how a RFID system can accurately determine unique position of tags distributed over a specific area or volume.

IFUS – Innovation oriented research and education within sensor technology

In this project, targeted actions will be implemented in order to reinforce research, technological development and innovation among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Mid Nordic region. The actions are focused to a selected group of SMEs with great potential for innovation but with limited ability to independently carry out necessary research and technological development within sensor technology.

kW Converters - High Frequency Medium Power Isolated Converters

Mid Sweden University have in a few years reached the research front in high frequency magnetics and converters for power transfer applications in the power levels of 50-100W. This project targeting the medium power level converters (few kW) at high frequency, based on the expertise in the existing research carried out in power electronics group. Together with industrial partners such as SAAB anew, more effective high frequency kW converters will be developed.

LIFE – Light Field Evaluation System

This three year project has the aim to build a light field communication test bed and explore the consequences on processing, distribution and presentation by utilizing a large number of cameras of different types and presenting captured data in different ways. Industrial partners, Ericsson and Axis Communications, will us the project results as input to video standardization works and improving the image quality in video surveillance.

M2M Communication - Reliable and Secure M2M Communication in Cyber-Physical Systems

A smart grid network is a cyber-physical system that integrates power infrastructure with IT. Smart grid networks will use machine-to-machine (M2M) communication infrastructure and advanced control techniques for power distribution and management. But several key challenges such as reliability, interoperability have to be solved first. This project will investigate new reliable and secure concepts of M2M communication in smart grid networks and demonstrate the results in a real environment.

Kulturmagasinet i Sundsvall

Making fresh air visible (prestudy)

The purpose of this prestudy is to create a visualization service that illustrate the air quality in a city, both over time and in real time. The intention is to influence citizens to an environmentally conscious behavior such as choice of transportation routes. The aim is to improve the environment in the inner city of Sundsvall. This prestudy will promote the development of a visualization center at Mid Sweden University and sustainable growth in Sundsvall Municipality to year 2021.

Sentio

Micro/Nanoelectronics Competence Hub

In this project researchers will establish a Competence Hub within the field of Micro/Nanoelectronics with the object to gather and share knowledge between academy and companies. The hub will act as a national junction and will build networks for knowledge sharing, project collaboration, and consortia.

Research with OPNET

Wireless monitoring and control solutions (e.g., WirelessHART) in industrial harsh environments offer benefits in relation to lower cost and easier deployments than the case for wired solutions (e.g., Fieldbus system and wired HART). A notable trend in industrial automation in recent years has been the replacement of wired communication with low power and low cost wireless sensor and actuator networks (IWSAN).

SURF - Surface characterization of industrial large area products

The paper- and paperboard industries are undergoing a transition in terms of product specializations. A decreasing interest for Newspaper and harder competition in paperboard products forces the paper- and paperboard industries to start producing new products, where there is even higher demand on surface characteristics, since most products will undergo high quality print. This project will attempt to bridge the gap of modern industrial measurement needs for surface characterization.
