Background

I am a PhD student in tourism geography. My previous degrees consist of a Master’s of Science in sustainable development from Uppsala University, Sweden and a Bachelor’s of Arts with a major in international relation and economics from Mount Allison University, Sackville, Canada.

Area of interest

Regional development, rural tourism, sustainable tourism, social sustainability, place and identity.

Current research

As part of my doctoral project, I research how tourism can be a tool for local development. I will research three cases around Northern Europe; each representing different strategies used by local actors to turn tourism activities into an instrument of community development. My first case is about an eco-village and the use of volunteers to reinforce a sense of place amongst community members. The second case is a look in the lives of members of an arts and crafts community as a new discourse to guide tourism development strategies in the rural cultural economy. The third case, will be exploring the role of a heritage attraction in contributing to social integration. These cases are meant to highlight that there is more to tourism than economic gains as local actors can work on a variety of goals by using tourism.

Teaching and tutoring

I am involved in courses at the master’s and bachelor level and soon also at the outdoor management program in Åre. My tasks consist mostly of supervising student work, correcting assignments and lecturing. The courses I have been involved with the most were cultural tourism (online course) and tourism in the experience economy.
