Research Project at STC
ASIS - Autonomous Sensors for Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks
Can autonomous wireless sensor networks be designed to fulfil the requirements of industrial applications? That is the research question for this synergy research project, ASIS. Researchers are addressing the challenges of making the wireless sensor network technology competitive in relation to wired networks with respect to reliability, predictability, communication performance, and maintainability. Three research issues will be addressed in a coordinated manner to advance the field.
BrightnESS - Building a research infrastructure and synergies for highest scientific impact on ESS
BrightnESS is a European Union-funded project within the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme. There are 18 European institutes and universities from 11 countries participating in the BrightnESS partnership. The total budget is nearly €20 M and the duration of the project will be three years. And Mid Sweden University is a part of the project.
Chrome - Measurement of Chrome with X-ray (Prestudy 2)
Emissions of heavy metals and other pollutant substances is an important consequence for the surrounding community that industries entail. Therefore, emissions to air and water needs to be monitored. X-ray spectroscopy is a fast and efficient method that can identify different elements in a material. The objective of this study is to investigate whether the method can be used to measure the presence of chromium in fly ash from Korstaverket and leachate from Blåbergstippen.
City Movements (pre-study)
City Movements is a pre-study to examine whether IR technology can count and measure people's movement patterns in a particular place without intruding on their privacy concerns.
DAWN - Data Analytics in (Wireless) Industrial Networks
In 2020, about 75 billion different devices will be connected to the Internet and together they make the Internet of Things. The process industry can really take advantage of the increased data availability in terms of both productivity and energy efficiency. In this project, researchers will focus on the development of data analysis system for large-scale sensor networks. The aim is to increase capacity for the industry's data management by developing new data mining algorithms.
Digital Visualization at School
Visualization at school will investigate advantages by employing digital visualizations in a school environment. The purpose is two-fold: It will contribute to didactive development within the mathematical subject (Mathematics) by considering two diferent methods of learning geometry, as well as examining the usability and user experience for interactive visualizations and employed technology.
Detector and method development in the UV and EUV wavelength region, for application in processing industries
The challenge is to develop a method for measurement of optical response signals in the ultra violet (UV) wavelength range to define properties of the fibrilled cellulose fibre. The optical processes involved in the measurement method are transmission, absorption, diffraction and scattering, depended nt ofn the properties of measured object. The method is extended to an extreme ultra violet (EUV) radiation field with a wavelength of 13.5 nm to be able to resolve smaller particles.
ETN-FPI - European Training Network on Full Parallax Imaging
Recreating visual reality can never be achieved by painting an image on a flat surface such as a TV screen. It requires a full-parallax display which can recreate the complete lightfield. Recent years have seen major developments and now the European Training Network on Full-Parallax Imaging (ETN-FPI) will develop a new generation of researchers trained both in the relevant physics, and in the biology of human vision.
FIBER
The expansion of the fiber connections is going on all around the world and in Sweden fiber investments is expected to reach 10 billion SEK in just 2016. In this research project, researchers will, in collaboration with the regional fiber industry, develop new installation techniques and tools to improve the efficiency of fiber connections.
Flis - Characterization of wood disintegration processes
The condition of cutting tools used in a wood disintegration process has a large impact on the quality of the products. Today we don’t know how long the intervals for replacement of worn out tools should be. This project aims at gaining knowledge for how process parameters for wood disintegration are related. By using optical techniques, wireless on-rotor sensing and multivariate modelling we want to find out the most feasible and cost efficient way to monitor these parameters online.
Foggy
In order to determine icing conditions and to make icing forecast information it is required to know the air content of liquid water, Liquid Water Content (LWC) and droplet size, Median Volume Diameter (MVD).
FORIC - Forest as a Resource Industrial Research College
FORIC (Forest as a resource industrial research college) is our new industrial research school. Program director is professor Per Engstrand. FORIC is financed by the KK Foundation and a part of our KK research environment at Mid Sweden University.
GRIT - Distributed Green Services on the Internet-of-Things
The goal of this project is to enable new types of future IoT applications, with a particular focus on applications that include many participants and thus require large scale information dissemination.
ID Pos - Large Areas for RFID Identification, Positioning and Interaction
In 2020 there will be up to 50 billion devices connected to the Internet. A growing part of these devices are RFID- and NFC technology. Today a RFID systems have the ability to determine the presence and ID-number of a tag. In this project researcher want to investigate how a RFID system can accurately determine unique position of tags distributed over a specific area or volume.
IFUS – Innovation oriented research and education within sensor technology
In this project, targeted actions will be implemented in order to reinforce research, technological development and innovation among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Mid Nordic region. The actions are focused to a selected group of SMEs with great potential for innovation but with limited ability to independently carry out necessary research and technological development within sensor technology.
kW Converters - High Frequency Medium Power Isolated Converters
Mid Sweden University have in a few years reached the research front in high frequency magnetics and converters for power transfer applications in the power levels of 50-100W. This project targeting the medium power level converters (few kW) at high frequency, based on the expertise in the existing research carried out in power electronics group. Together with industrial partners such as SAAB anew, more effective high frequency kW converters will be developed.
LIFE – Light Field Evaluation System
This three year project has the aim to build a light field communication test bed and explore the consequences on processing, distribution and presentation by utilizing a large number of cameras of different types and presenting captured data in different ways. Industrial partners, Ericsson and Axis Communications, will us the project results as input to video standardization works and improving the image quality in video surveillance.
M2M Communication - Reliable and Secure M2M Communication in Cyber-Physical Systems
A smart grid network is a cyber-physical system that integrates power infrastructure with IT. Smart grid networks will use machine-to-machine (M2M) communication infrastructure and advanced control techniques for power distribution and management. But several key challenges such as reliability, interoperability have to be solved first. This project will investigate new reliable and secure concepts of M2M communication in smart grid networks and demonstrate the results in a real environment.
Micro/Nanoelectronics Competence Hub
In this project researchers will establish a Competence Hub within the field of Micro/Nanoelectronics with the object to gather and share knowledge between academy and companies. The hub will act as a national junction and will build networks for knowledge sharing, project collaboration, and consortia.
Method for Cost Optimized Volumetric Object Monitoring Systems
In this project researchers will investigate the requirements for VSN node architecture and deployment topology for remote outdoor monitoring. The goal is to find a cost optimized design constrained limited resources. Through close collaboration with industrial partners researchers will provide the industry with a tool for predicting future activity within a volume. Although this project focuses on monitoring wind farms and flying birds’ activities, the result are applicable in other fields.
Permanent magnet DC motor with on-rotor drive system 2.0
In this project researchers will carry on the results from a previous project that developed a variable-speed low-voltage motor drive architecture with potentials to achieve better efficiency and performance at lower material and production costs than state-of-the-art industrial motors. This project will focus on the implementation and production with new performance tests.
Quality of Experience for Augmented Telepresence
In this project researchers will investigate the Quality of Experience (QoE) for Augmented Telepresence. Augmented Telepresence can be describes as when you combine High quality video conferencing with information from databases in real time. By combing these two techniques it is possible to for example to operate a crane from a different location.
Master of Science in Sensor and Automation Systems
A new Master in Sensor and Automations Systems will be developed in collaboration with industrial partner companies. The objective of the proposed project is to transform the current Master’s program into a nationally and internationally relevant and attractive through stronger collaboration with industry and a refined thematic focus. In order to achieve these project objectives, investigation and development of both the program content and teaching methods are necessary.
SMART - Smarta system och tjänster för ett effektivt och innovativt samhälle
Teknikutvecklingen ställer nya krav på regionens företag men ger också en unik möjlighet att utveckla nya produkter och tjänster och öka konkurrenskraften på en internationell nivå. I forskningsprojektet SMART är syftet att öka medvetenheten och kunskapen om smarta system och tjänster så att regionens små och stora företag kan dra nytta av denna nya marknad.
SPECT - Multi-parameter measurement method for radiation protection
The project SPECT involves the development of a method together with electronic equipment for protection against ionizing radiation, which is done by simultaneously detecting radiation type (alpha, beta, gamma, neutrons) and the corresponding particle or photon energy. By comparing with a built-in database of known radioactive materials, the radiation source is identified, presented and possibly an alarm is given.
SURF - Surface characterization of industrial large area products
The paper- and paperboard industries are undergoing a transition in terms of product specializations. A decreasing interest for Newspaper and harder competition in paperboard products forces the paper- and paperboard industries to start producing new products, where there is even higher demand on surface characteristics, since most products will undergo high quality print. This project will attempt to bridge the gap of modern industrial measurement needs for surface characterization.
Time- and Mission-Critical Communication in Low-Power Wireless Networks
The modern solutions in industrial wireless communication are currently unable to fulfil the expectations of process automation. The underlying reason is the lack of resilient communication protocols that are able to seamlessly recover from communication outages. This project will investigate and propose more reliable channel quality indicators and better coexistence mechanisms. The long-term vision of the project is that wireless communication should be as reliable and predictable as wired.
TORCI - A robust Torque sensor for Challenging Industrial Applications
Process monitoring of industrial processes is often very limited. To measure key process parameters the sensors must be able to stand high temperatures and mechanical forces and should not interfere with the process. This project will investigate a method of torque measurement where the deformation experienced by the sensing shaft is converted into volume change.
WIRIC – Wide Range Isolated Converters
Power electronics applications are continuously growing in general and more applications require or benefit from ability to handle larger voltage variation on primary and/or secondary side. Universal input AC/DC converters are one such example where the DC link voltage may vary three times dependent on where the converter is used.
X-COAT - Characterisation of layered structures by a combination of X-ray flourescence and Compton imaging
In this project researchers are investigating the possibilities to characterize coated paper with a combination of flourescence and Compton imaging.
