Simulation can be utilized in RCR Lab for many different purposes. We have gathered examples of how the lab can be used, and of previous activities in our facilities.

One way of thinking about the possibilities provided by the lab is to either study how individuals behave/learn/react or the processes in which individuals participate. Are these processes natural? Do they correspond to individual’s instinctive reactions and behaviours? Are they possible to improve?

You can for example:

  • Train for situations that, because of safety risks, cannot be acted out in a real environment, situations that may for example involve road traffic or fire.
  • Recreate environments and situations in order to learn more from them, both for debriefing and development.
  • Facilitate people in getting familiar and comfortable with different situations, before they are faced with such situations in real life. This can for example be used to educate personnel in newly implemented work assignments.
  • Experience a planned environment, for instance a housing area that has yet to be built.
  • Undergo how something feels, to evacuate a smoke filled room for example.

RCR Lab is not solely a simulation tool, the recording possibilities of 12 video cameras and a number of microphones also open up for:

  • Observation – the activities in the lab can be monitored live both from a control room and a larger debriefing room
  • Comparisons – differences between how groups perceive the same situation or how such perceptions change over time
  • Self- and group reflection by viewing video recordings
