Gender Studies is an academic discipline with a unique transdisciplinary competence in terms of knowledge and critical analysis of different types of power structures (such as, but not limited to: gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, class, age, religion, gender expression, disability, body constitution, geopolitical location) and how they interact with each other in e.g. society, politics, culture, technology and interpersonal relations. The focus of gender studies research is to broadly examine, problematize, question and change normative conceptions of socio-cultural power structures and to highlight what such conceptions do in terms of power relations, privilege, discrimination and oppression in different contexts. Gender studies at Gaskeuniversiteete/Mittuniversitetet has an ambition to develop also the interdisciplinary research in gender studies and in collaboration with activists and researchers in different contexts work for decolonization of feminist knowledge production.
In addition to gender studies being a separate subject, there is also the Forum for Gender Studies (FGV), which is an interdisciplinary and campus-wide platform for initiating and coordinating research.
