Background

Fredrik Nyman is Senior Lecturer (Social Work) in the Department of Psychology and Social Work since August 2023. Prior to joining Mid Sweden University, he was a Lecturer at the Institute of Gerontology in the School of Health and Welfare, Jönköping University (2021-2023). Fredrik completed his PhD in Anthropology at Durham University, England (2021) where he conducted an ethnographic study on biosociality and self-help support groups for older people with lung and respiratory diseases. This thesis has been revised into a monograph and will be published by Routledge (2024). He has previously completed both a Bachelor's (2013) and Master's (2015) degree in Social Anthropology from Stockholm University. In December 2023, he completed his second Master's degree, this time in Education Sciences (with a focus on Higher Education and Higher Education Pedagogy) at Oxford Brookes University, England.

Fredrik identifies as an ethnographer and gerontologist, and is an active member of both the Swedish Gerontological Society (SGS) and the Swedish National Network for Social Science Research on Ageing and Eldercare. With wide experience of working in interdisciplinary and interprofessional settings, he also considers himself a non-disciplinary researcher, with a willingness to cross and challenge established disciplinary boundaries. His main profile areas include social work in health care and public health, medical humanities, critical welfare studies, and disability studies. He holds particular expertise in the fields of ageing and eldercare, as well as disability research.
