Sensible Things that Communicate - Sensing for the future

A critical element in the explosive growth of wireless communications over the last twenty years has been the proliferation of a low-cost sophisticated “sensor” technology, the cellular phone. This wireless revolution is expanding through the introduction of IEEE 802.11 standard and Bluetooth technologies.

Because of the higher bandwidth, these technologies provide a broader range of services over shorter distances. The ultimate success of these new technologies will depend on the progress and proliferation of a new set of “sensors” nodes with the same attributes as the cellular phone, having much broader range of capabilities and still meeting critical cost objectives. This is the reaserch area targeted in this research profile sponsored by the Knowledge Foundation in Sweden and 13 Swedish industrial partners.

We have chosen to focus on three specific technologies in the STC concept:

  • digital video surveillance
  • low-cost RFID sensors, and
  • low-cost sensor solutions for on-line measurement applications.

The deliverables include:

  • development and demonstration of low-cost sensor technologies applicable to the partner industries
  • demonstration" of a TCP/IP-based wireless sensor network with autonomous sensing and communicating nodes.

The main goal in the profile is to provide low-cost STC solutions, which allow industrial growth utilizing the IT communication infrastructure in new business models.
