Master by Research at STC

At the research center Sensible Things that Communicate, STC, we offer an education called Master by Research in the subjects of Electronics as well as Computer Engineering. The Master by Research programme targets those who are highly motivated to develop skills and knowledge for future career in academic, industrial or public R&D. This is also an excellent preparation for future doctoral studies.

Master by Research (MBR) is a study programme where you as a student will start up your own project, which after two years will lead to your Master's thesis. You will be a member of a research group at STC and carry out research closely supervised by your professor and other members of the group.

 

Only a few students will be admitted. If you have shown excellent results in your Bachelor studies and are self-motivated to further specialize in your field academically, this is something for you.

 

Master by Research - Computer Engineering


Research group: Realistic3D

The research group Realistic 3D is developing future 3D visualization for media, industry and medical applications. Research topics include plenoptic imaging, autostereoscopy, 3D quality metrics and capture, coding and synthesis of 3D video.

 

We are looking for two students with strong knowledge in at least two of the following areas: signal/image processing, computer graphics, computer vision, and advanced programming (MatLab, C/C++, OpenGL, OpenCV). Experience from 3D related work is beneficial.

Program outline

• Degree specific courses

30 ECTS in total. Including general electronics/computer science and specializations in your research area.

 

• Scientific writing and presentation technique

Five weeks (7.5 ECTS).

 

• Problem formulation and thesis planning

Five weeks (7.5 ECTS).

 

• Theory development and experimental design

Ten weeks (15 ECTS).

 

• Thesis project I, II and III

Three 10 week projects devoted to performing the thesis project

(15 ECTS each).

 

• Thesis

Writing, presentation and defense of your thesis, ten weeks (15 ECTS).


 

Admission requirements

1) General admission with general exemption from the requirement in Swedish.

 

2) English course B, or documented results from any of the following international English tests:

  • Computer-based TOEFL with minimum grade 4 on listing fractional Essay Rating, and a total of 213 results.
  • TOEFL paper-based with a total score of 550 and rating requirements in four subsamples Written.
  • Internet-based TOEFL with minimum grade Writing 17 subsamples Written Test (TWE) and a total profit of 79.
  •  IELTS test with at least 6.0 points and no cycles under 5.0 points.

3) Bachelor's degree in: 

  • Computer Science
  • Computer Engineering
  • Electronics
  • Or equivalent

Selection criteria

  • Applicant's competence in relation to the chosen subject area.
  • Personal letter of application.
  • Scientific quality of independent work within bachelor's degree or article, based on the planned research project requirements.
  •  The student's analytical skills, ability to express oneself in written English and ability to work independently and in groups.
  • The assessment made ​​by the responsible for the subject.

 


 

Tuition and Application Fees

Students who are citizens of countries outside the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland are required to pay a tuition fee for studies in Sweden.

 

For studies in Master by Research at STC the fee is

125 000 SEK for year one and

125 000 SEK for year two.
